SUMMARY:CAPIC Legal and Business Considerations 2020
DESCRIPTION:CAPIC’s own legal counsel Dan Pollack leads an online panel discussion on topics including copyright\, incorporation\, and image licensing. \nPanellists\nKaren Biilmann – Art Director at 500px \nKaren is a Toronto native with 10 years of experience in the photography industry. Her focus is visual creativity within photography and advertising\, working with global independent photographers and brands. Karen joined 500px\, a global photography community with over 15 million photographers\, in 2016\, as a member of the photo Licensing team\, working as a commercial image reviewer\, assessing creative and quality. She later moved to 500px’s custom photography team\, where she collaborated directly with clients and companies such as Wix\, Toyota\, Rogers and Google to understand their commercial and visual needs\, and connect them to a roster of photographers. Karen currently holds the role of Art Director for 500px. In addition to conducting quantitative and qualitative visual analysis of 500px’s creative content offering\, she also routinely translates visual trends within stock photography and commercial advertising\, providing insights and guidance for 500px’s global community of creators.” \nDon Komarechka – Photographer \nDon is a nature\, macro and landscape photographer located in Barrie\, Ontario. From auroras to pollen\, insects to infrared\, much of Don’s photographic adventures reveal a deeper understanding of how the universe works. Exploring the world that we cannot see with our own eyes has been a common thread in Don’s career as a professional photographer. Always science-minded but never formally trained\, Don uses photography as a way to explore and understand the world around him. Photographing something unusual or unknown is the perfect excuse to learn something new. Don’s work often pushes up against the technical limitations of modern camera equipment and the physical limitations of light itself. \nTanya Kong – Lawyer \nTanya Kong is a lawyer\, occasional artist and the founder of Kong Law (www.kong-law.com)\, a law practice based out of Whistler\, BC. Tanya was called to the Ontario Bar in 2012 and the British Columbia Bar in 2016\, after making a big move out west and never turning back. She began her legal career with one of Canada’s fastest growing software companies\, Point Click Care\, and quickly learned the trials and tribulations of a small business experiencing rapid growth. At 30 years of age\, she led the company’s legal department\, advising the CFO on all legal matters from commercial sales\, corporate due diligences\, health and privacy compliance in the US and Canada\, as well as employment\, litigation\, anti-trust and some IP matters. After moving to Whistler in 2015 and inspired by the potential of entrepreneurship; Tanya decided to start her own law practice. Today she provides legal advice to small to medium sized business owners and young families across B.C. in the areas of commercial\, corporate\, wills and estates law\, as well as incapacity planning. She’s excited to join the panel and educate freelance creators about the basics of incorporating so they can grow and succeed as business owners and artists.  \nDan Pollack – Lawyer \nWith 15+ years of experience at leading law firms in the United States and Canada\, in his own private practice and through key in-house counsel roles in the media industry\, including acting as General Counsel for an international image licensing agency (Masterfile) and as Legal Counsel for the Society of Composers\, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN)\, Dan Pollack has developed a deep understanding of the complex legal issues that confront creatives. Dan often works with creators such as photographers\, filmmakers\, musicians and writers to help them protect and gain value from their work. In particular\, he has extensive experience working with photographers (and their representatives) and stock image agencies with copyright enforcement and protection\, contracts\, licensing agreements and releases. Dan also regularly advises his clients on legal issues relating to marketing\, licensing\, social media\, contracts\, litigation\, privacy and general corporate law. In 2018\, Dan joined the firm Dipchand LLP (https://dipchand.com/) where he is continuing his practice in IP\, New Media and Entertainment Law.

SUMMARY:CAPIC Toronto - Monetize Your Work: Blockchain Technology
DESCRIPTION:Chief Innovation Officer at Access Copyright\, Sapanpreet Singh Narang\, will explain Blockchain Technology and answer questions. \n\n\nRegister for your ticket here\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nThe demand for content has never been greater – in Canada and beyond – yet it has never been more challenging for rights holders to receive payment when their work is used. Blockchain technology holds the potential to change the compensation paradigm. A new ecosystem\, powered by exponential technologies like blockchain and artificial intelligence\, is emerging that will evolve the way content creators\, publishers and audiences engage with content. We believe this technology is the future of rights management. \nIn this session\, Access Copyright and Prescient Innovations\, will share learning from their experience working with Blockchain technology and share details about their work underway with Attribution Ledger\, Fanship and Imprimo. \n  \nGenerously sponsored by the Access Copyright Foundation. \n\n\n
