SUMMARY:Xposé Speaker Series: Michelle Huisman & Thomas Brasch
DESCRIPTION:CAPIC Toronto Chapter presents: \nThe Xposé 2022 Speaker Series\n \nCAPIC is pleased to announce the Xposé 2022 Speaker Series. Two days of talks will be taking place in the gallery space throughout the run of the Xposé 2022 exhibition. The exhibition will be mounted from May 11th to May 22nd\, 2022\, at the Papermill Gallery at Todmorden Mills Heritage Site in Toronto. \nJoin CAPIC Saturday\, May 14th\, 2022 from 2-4pm for talks from two fine art photographers: Michelle Huisman and Thomas Brasch. Both will present on their journeys to becoming lens-based artists\, career transitions\, and their respective practices. \n  \nMichelle Huisman\nOn Coming back to Photography \nJoin Michelle Leone Huisman as she talks about her experience of coming full circle back to photography. Learning from Professor Barbara Astman at Ontario College of Arts and Design about alternative processes in 4th year University was an influential highlight of her appreciation of unique creative processes. This experience led to selling her thesis project to Polaroid. After graduating from Ryerson University (renaming in process) Photographic Arts with Honors\, Huisman left the Toronto area and started new business and creative adventures in Vancouver. Since that formative time\, she has maintained an avid interest in alternative photography processes. After using her photographic background to support her set decorating and interior design businesses\, she has come back to embrace her passion for alternative printing processes in fine art photography. This resurgent interest led to a wonderful introduction to Bob Carnie in 2019. Please join her as she talks about her experiences outside of photography and learning a 19th Century printing process called tri-colour gum bichromate over palladium.  \n  \nMichelle Leone Huisman is an award-winning fine art photographer from Vancouver\, BC who seeks out beauty in everyday surroundings.  \nThe pandemic has inspired her to create two exhibitions. The first An Unexpected Collection features photographs of spoons broken during the 7pm cheer for first responders and has shown across Canada. The current exhibition Global Pandemic presents photographs of discarded face masks juxtaposed with objects from nature and paired with children’s fables.  \nHuisman uses a 19th Century printing technique called tri-colour gum bichromate over palladium. The timelessness\, craftmanship and originality produced\, resonates with her approach to fine art photography. This technique is reputed to maintain its quality for more than 500 years. She chose this technique out of a sense of archival responsibility. The enduring quality of the print ensures these stories can still be told for generations to come.  \nWorking with and learning from photographic printmaker Bob Carnie has transformed Huisman’s photography experience. The process has added new shades of context and meaning to these collections. \nwww.michellehuisman.com\n  \nThomas Brasch\nThe Business Behind the Practice: Notes on Sustaining a Career as a Lens-Based Artist \nThomas’ style of lens-based abstraction is multi-layered\, and provides a new narrative to how we can see conventional pictures from a new perspective through the use of powerful aesthetics. However\, creativity only seems to be 20% of the work. The other 80% of a photography career is the business and promotional elements. Thomas will share his personal career journey\, his successes and failures\, and provide useful suggestions on how to make your mark without breaking the bank (too much). \n \nBefore embarking on his second career as a lens-based artist\, Thomas Brasch (B.A.\, B.Ed.\, MBA) devoted thirty years to education (secondary school: sciences\, French\, and special education). Completely self-taught in analogue and digital photography\, he is able to showcase his perceptions of beauty\, turning the real into the the surreal. With a background in sciences\, languages\, education\, and business\, he is able to blend the skills he has learned and apply them to his artistic practice. \nhttps://thomasbrasch.com

SUMMARY:CAPIC Legal and Business Considerations 2020
DESCRIPTION:CAPIC’s own legal counsel Dan Pollack leads an online panel discussion on topics including copyright\, incorporation\, and image licensing. \nPanellists\nKaren Biilmann – Art Director at 500px \nKaren is a Toronto native with 10 years of experience in the photography industry. Her focus is visual creativity within photography and advertising\, working with global independent photographers and brands. Karen joined 500px\, a global photography community with over 15 million photographers\, in 2016\, as a member of the photo Licensing team\, working as a commercial image reviewer\, assessing creative and quality. She later moved to 500px’s custom photography team\, where she collaborated directly with clients and companies such as Wix\, Toyota\, Rogers and Google to understand their commercial and visual needs\, and connect them to a roster of photographers. Karen currently holds the role of Art Director for 500px. In addition to conducting quantitative and qualitative visual analysis of 500px’s creative content offering\, she also routinely translates visual trends within stock photography and commercial advertising\, providing insights and guidance for 500px’s global community of creators.” \nDon Komarechka – Photographer \nDon is a nature\, macro and landscape photographer located in Barrie\, Ontario. From auroras to pollen\, insects to infrared\, much of Don’s photographic adventures reveal a deeper understanding of how the universe works. Exploring the world that we cannot see with our own eyes has been a common thread in Don’s career as a professional photographer. Always science-minded but never formally trained\, Don uses photography as a way to explore and understand the world around him. Photographing something unusual or unknown is the perfect excuse to learn something new. Don’s work often pushes up against the technical limitations of modern camera equipment and the physical limitations of light itself. \nTanya Kong – Lawyer \nTanya Kong is a lawyer\, occasional artist and the founder of Kong Law (www.kong-law.com)\, a law practice based out of Whistler\, BC. Tanya was called to the Ontario Bar in 2012 and the British Columbia Bar in 2016\, after making a big move out west and never turning back. She began her legal career with one of Canada’s fastest growing software companies\, Point Click Care\, and quickly learned the trials and tribulations of a small business experiencing rapid growth. At 30 years of age\, she led the company’s legal department\, advising the CFO on all legal matters from commercial sales\, corporate due diligences\, health and privacy compliance in the US and Canada\, as well as employment\, litigation\, anti-trust and some IP matters. After moving to Whistler in 2015 and inspired by the potential of entrepreneurship; Tanya decided to start her own law practice. Today she provides legal advice to small to medium sized business owners and young families across B.C. in the areas of commercial\, corporate\, wills and estates law\, as well as incapacity planning. She’s excited to join the panel and educate freelance creators about the basics of incorporating so they can grow and succeed as business owners and artists.  \nDan Pollack – Lawyer \nWith 15+ years of experience at leading law firms in the United States and Canada\, in his own private practice and through key in-house counsel roles in the media industry\, including acting as General Counsel for an international image licensing agency (Masterfile) and as Legal Counsel for the Society of Composers\, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN)\, Dan Pollack has developed a deep understanding of the complex legal issues that confront creatives. Dan often works with creators such as photographers\, filmmakers\, musicians and writers to help them protect and gain value from their work. In particular\, he has extensive experience working with photographers (and their representatives) and stock image agencies with copyright enforcement and protection\, contracts\, licensing agreements and releases. Dan also regularly advises his clients on legal issues relating to marketing\, licensing\, social media\, contracts\, litigation\, privacy and general corporate law. In 2018\, Dan joined the firm Dipchand LLP (https://dipchand.com/) where he is continuing his practice in IP\, New Media and Entertainment Law.
